Commercial stem cell storage

In 2002, the KNOV took up the position that obstetricians are not responsible for the (correct) commercial collection of stem cells. In January 2006, the position was reassessed and maintained.

The reason for this is that no new scientific insights have been developed demonstrating the benefit of privately storing stem cells taken from blood of the umbilical cord without a medical (family) indication.

Hence the KNOV still prefers storage in umbilical cord blood banks for anonymous donors. Anyone who qualifies for a transplant can make use of this. Further information about these umbilical cord blood banks can be found on the Europdonor website.
